chrisowen: Gm buds its ho c fave plz its runk i Nxf6 its a cog mug over!
Nov-22-23  Brenin: 31 Nxf6 Kxf6 32 g5+ Kf7 33 f6, regaining the piece, is not hard to see. Does Black have anything better than 33 ... Nh5? How about Ng6? After 34 fxg7+ Kxg7 material is equal; does White have any attack left?
Nov-22-23  Brenin: The answer to my question seems to be yes: 35 Nxg6 Kxg6 35 Bh5+, and if Rxh5 then 36 Rf6+ Kxg7 37 Rxh5, and White gas won the exchange, with a much stronger position.
Nov-22-23  mel gibson: I saw 2 different plies - both put Black under pressure: 31. Ng6 &
31. Nxf6

Stockfish 16 picks a different ply to the text:

31. Ng6

(31. Ng6 (Nh4-g6 Rh8xh1 Kg2xh1 Bd7xf5 g4xf5 Ne7xf5 Rf1-g1 Qc7-d8 Be2-d1 Rg8-h8+ Ng6xh8+ Qd8xh8+ Qd2-h2 Qh8xh2+ Kh1xh2 Kf7-f8 Rg1-f1 ) +5.89/43 150)

score for White +5.89 depth 43.

If I force SF to play the text ply it's slightly better:

31. Nxf6 Kxf6

(31. .. Kxf6 (Kf7xf6 g4-g5+ Kf6-f7 f5-f6 Ne7-f5 f6xg7 Kf7xg7 Nh4xf5+ Bd7xf5 Rf1xf5 Rh8xh1 Kg2xh1 b7-b5 c4xb5 Rg8-h8+ Kh1-g2 ) -6.56/44 654)

score for Black -6.56 depth 44.

Nov-23-23  Allderdice83: I had 31.Nxf6 Kxf6 32.g5+ Kf7 33. g6+ Kf8 34. f6 and now,

34 ... Ngf5 35. fxe7+ or 34 ... Nef5 35. fxg7+ followed by 36. Nxf5 should win; White will be up a piece for a pawn.

34 ... Ne8 35. fxe7+ Kxe7 36. Qg5+ Nf6 37. Qxf6+ Ke8 38. Nf5 Bxf5 39. Rxh8 wins

34 ... Nc8 35. fxg7+ Kxg7 36. Rf7# or 35 ... Ke8 (or Ke7) 36. gxh8 wins

34 ... Nxg6 35. Nxg6+ Ke8 (or 35 ... Kf7 36. fxg7+ Kxf7 37. Nxh8 followed by 38. Qg5# or 38. Qh6#) 36. f7+ Kd8 37. fxg8=Q+ Rxg8 38. Qg5+ Kc8 39. Ne7+ Kb8 40. Nxg8 wins

Nov-23-23  Allderdice83: Also, in my line, if 33 ... Kf6, then 34. Nf3 threatening Qg5#. If then

34 ... Kxf5, then 35. Bd3+ followed by 36. Qg5# no matter what Black does.

34 ... Rh5, simply 35. Rxh5

34 ... Ne6 35. dxe6 Bc8 36. Qg5+ Kg7 37. f6+ Kf8 38. g7+ Ke8 39. f7+ Kd8 40. fxg8=Q+ Rxg8 41. Qf6 wins

Nov-23-23  Allderdice83: I wasted a lot of time, though, on 31. Ng5+, which appears to win if Black takes (32. f6) but doesn't do much if Black just plays 31 ... Ke8
Nov-23-23  Allderdice83: Also, after 33. g6+ Ke8 (probably Black's best, actually), 34. f6 Ngf5, 35. f7+ Kd8 36. fxg8=Q+ Rxg8, White has 37. Qg5. The N on e7 is pinned, the pawn on g6 is protected, the N on f5 is threatened, and White's up a rook for a knight. The game might continue: 37 ... Nxh4+ 38. Qxh4 Rxg6+ 39. Kh2 Rg7 40. Qh8+ Rg8 41. Rf8+ Rxf8 42. Qxf8+ Be8 43. Bh5 Qd7 44. Qxe8+ Qxe8 45. Bxe8 Kxe8 46. Kg2 with a won endgame.
