Feb-25-23 | | jrredfield: Black pretty much lost the game after 23 ... Qxc2? immediately giving White a significant lead. 23 ...Qa5 would have kept Black in the game, a nearly even score. |
|
Feb-25-23 | | vajeer: As some have observed, 32. Ng6+ is the actual solution.
32. Qd6+ is not only much inferior, but it takes a careful play by white to pull off victory. Looks like White must play 40. g4 in that line. A couple of moves I tried including the 40. Qb6 played in the actual game is given 0.0 by computer analysis. |

Feb-25-23 | | Allderdice83: 32. Ng6+ was my choice also. White wins if the N is taken: 32 ... hxg6 33. Qxd6+

34 ... Rxh7 35. Rf8#
34 ... Rxf6 35. h8=Q+ Kf7 36. Qh7+ Ke8 37. Qhe7# So what if Black doesn't take the knight?
32 ... Kg8 33. Qg5 looks winning, as White threatens 34. Ne5+. Black doesn't have a defense; 33 ... Rxf6 34. Qxf6 with mate next move (either 35. Qg7# or if 34 ... Qf7, then 35. Qh8#). 33 ... Re8 34. Ne5+ Kf8 35. Nxf7 Re6 36. Qg7+ Ke7 37. Ne5+ and either 37 ... Ke8 38. Rf8# or 37 ... Kd8 38. Qd7# 32 ... Ke8 33. Qe4+
33 ... Kd7 34. Qxb7+ Ke8 35. Qxa8+ Kd7 36. Qb7+ Ke8 37. Qc8# 33 ... Kd8 34. Rxd6+ Kc7 35. Qe5 and then: 35 ... Re8 36. Re6+ Kd7 37. Qd6+ Kc8 38. Rxe8# 35 ... Rf5 36. Qe7+ Kb8 37. Qd8+ Ka7 38. Feb-25-23 | | agb2002: White has a knight for a rook.
Black threatens Rxf6 and Qe6.
White can create new threats with 32.Qxd6:
A) 32... Rxf6 33.Ng6+
A.1) 33... Ke8 34.Qe7#.
A.2) 33... Kf7 34.Ne5+ Ke8 (34... Kg8 35.Qxf6 and mate in two) 35.Qxf6 A.2.a) 35... Qd5 36.Qh8+ Ke7 37.Qxh7+ (37.Qxa8 Qxe5+ draws) followed by f4 looks good for White. A.2.b) 35... Qg8 36.g4, unclear.
A.3) 33... Kg8 34.Qxf6 Qf7 (34... hxg6 35.Qg7#) 35.Qh8#. B) 32... Ke8 33.Ng8 wins (33... Rxf6 34.Qe7#; 33... Rd7 34.Q(R)f8#; 33... Qc4 34.Re6+ Qxe6 35.Qxe6+). C) 32... Qc4 33.Nc8+ Ke8 (33... (diagram) click for larger view White threatens with 22.Qg7#, as the Rook g8 is pinned, and if black takes the Rook with Queen, then 22.Qf6+ with mate in next moves follows. Of course, 21...Qg5 22.Qxg5 doesn't help black as well. |

Feb-25-23 | | paavoh: Went for 32. Ng6+ hxg6 (or Kg8) 33.Qxd6+ , or 32.- Ke8 33.Qe4+, both winning. In hindsight, the game line 32.Qxd6 seemed difficult. |
|
Feb-25-23 | | alshatranji: I saw 32. Ng6+, but I didn't know what to do after hxg6 33. Qxd6+ Kg8 (33...Qe8, 34.Re6+ is an obvious win) 34. Rxg6+ Kh7. Now Stockfish tells me that this is the winning line after 35.Qd3 (Actually, it ends in mate). I saw Qd3 immediately as the best move after I got to that point, but not in advance. So, I eventually settled for 32.Qg3, which is inferior. Well. |

Feb-25-23 | | outplayer: I first tried Qg5 then I saw that the black king would take the knight so I saw Qd6. |

Feb-25-23 | | Allderdice83: The Nyezhmetdinov-Rossolimo Attack ("NR attack," I call it) has given me fits; I'm just trying to play a Sveshnikov, and my opponent won't let me. So annoying :) 3 ... Qc7 isn't very good. Yes, it stops Black from getting doubled pawns, but White gets a huge lead in development. Best according to Stockfish (11, not 15, darn Chess.com changed it!) is 3 ... e6 followed by 4 ... Ne7 if White doesn't trade off the bishop first. Black shouldn't fear getting doubled pawns here -- take back with the b pawn and get nice center control and the 2 bishops. 10. Bg5 is not that good. 10. Bf4 is much better, pinning the d6 pawn. White will bring the rook from a1 to d1 and increase the presure. Example: Be7 11. Qf3 e5 12. Nd5
Qd8 13. Rad1 exd4 14. e5 Be6 15. exd6 Bxd6 16. Rxd4 Bxf4 17. Qxf4 Rc8 18. Qg4
Rc5 19. Qxg7 Rxd5 20. Rxd5 Qxd5 21. Qxh8 Kf8 22. Qxh7 Qxa2 23. Qh8 -- note that White allows the pawn fork but gets plenty back, having a rook and 3 pawns for two pieces at the end with Black's king still exposed. 12. Nf5 is an interesting speculative sacrifice but doesn't really work against best play. Why does Black give back material with 15 ... Be6? Just 15 ... Qd8 is good enough, and if 16. Nd5, then 16 ... Kh8. Stockfish 11 rates the position as -0.55. |
|
Feb-25-23 | | Allderdice83: Oops, forgot White can't play 34. h7 after 32 ... hxg6 33. Qxd6+ Ke8 because 34 ... Rxh7 is check. Just 34. Re6+ works, I guess. |

Feb-25-23 | | King.Arthur.Brazil: I didn't post anything yesterday, because the only lined I thought was the game one, however I failed to see that Ne5+ recovers the ♖, my fault (I was sleepy again, no much to dream at night). Nevertheless, I would say that Black could reply 40...Qd5 instead of 40...Rd8. The ♕ centralizing and the attack on the ♘ can put serious problems to White win. Obviously, latter move 41...Rd8 is a good complement. |

 | | steinitzfan: I was able to see that taking the knight after Ng6 would lose for Black. But as far as proceeding against Ke8 or Kg8, that's too much for me. |

The ♕ centralizing and the attack on the ♘ can put serious problems to White win.> On 40...Qd5, one plausible continuation seems 41.Qc7 (Threatening Qg7..., Qh8+..., and Qxh7+...) 41...Qe6 (Heading for f5, where the queen can control d7, f7, and h7.) 42.Qg7 Qf5 43.Ng4 (Threatening 44.Nf6+ Kd8 45.Qf8+ Kc7 46.Ne8+ winning the queen.) 43...Qh5+ (If 43...Qf4+, then 44.g3.) 44.Kg1 Qf7 45.Qh8+. Maybe Black can successfully improve on this line, but White's queen and knight coordinate awfully well. |
