Sep-16-24 | | stacase: Spent a little time looking at moves that didn't work because of Black's e5 Bishop. So, get rid of the Bishop! The Rook sacrifice produced the vision of the Black King's forced march to h4 and White slamming the door shut with 31.Rg1. And that's exactly how it went (-: |

Sep-16-24 | | IAmChesslord: Finally a puzzle I solved instantly.
There was only one candidate, no need to calculate the lines, the general idea was to get the king out and shut the door with the second rook. |
|
Sep-16-24 | | saturn2: My 31 Kh2 instead of Rg1 still leads to mate but it takes longer. |
|
Sep-16-24 | | TheaN: Slightly more involved Monday considering there's a non-forcing move that ends it. It's not that difficult however, as it's literally almost the entire White army versus a lone king. Black's rooks are doing nothing on closed or half-open files and the knights have no sequences to help their king: <29.Rxg5 Kxg5> alternatives lose heaps of material <30.Be3+> denying the king passage back to h6. This pattern of magnetizing the king and then preventing the same passage back is common. <30....Kh4 31.Rg1 #3>:

Whilst I did spot Black could still sac some material to postpone mate, it comes as the threats of Bf2+/Bg5+ and Nf4+ (combined #) are insurmountable. |

 | | offramp: The checkmating idea is original. The winner is a non-checking move. This is very good for a one-star puzzle. |

Black is now covering e3 and preventing White from breaking through momentarily, so it seems like Kxg5 may be an actual threat. It isn't. The best move is Rg2, but that's lame. White can simply play 30.exf5!? as after 30....Kxg5 the e-file may be open but 31.Be3+ still wins as after 31....Rxe3 32.Rg1+ Kh6 33.Nxe3 +- White won a piece in full. However, I personally like 30.Rxf5!, kind of proving the point that Black's position is very inactive. After 30....gxf5 White won two pieces from a rook, but wins back the exchange after 31.Be3+ Kh7 32.Nf6+ Kh8 33.Nxe8, and 33....Rxe8 34.Rf1 fxe4 35.Rxf7 +- ends it fairly swiftly. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: 28...Kh6?; sets all this up.
At first, I was stumped. (I saw Rxg5, but initially rejected it because I did not immediately see the follow up. I spent a few minutes going through my checklist, I also needed to calm down. (I got a SPAM call just a few seconds after I first looked at the problem, that stuff always torques me off!) Anyway, after I regained a degree of tranquility, and I could think clearly, I finally saw 29.RxB/g5!, KxR/g5;
(Otherwise Black is just a piece down.)
30.Be3+, Kh4; (The ONLY square!) 31.Rg1! " ±"
[The Black King is helpless against the dual threat of Bg5# AND Bf2#.] I think conditioning played a role here as well. After YEARS of super-easy problems, I am usually bored before I even look at the position. Maybe this is just an excuse ... ... ... (good problem). |
