Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-16-23  Dave12: The great vladimir Kramnik recently said that watching some of Carlsen rapid/blitz games, he feels that he would be 'very proud' if he himslef was able to produce such a level of play in classical. This game is probably one of them.

fredthebear: This symmetrical approach has transposed into a Queen's Gambit Declined D40 Semi-Tarrasch. White gets a cramped game with concerns on the light squares. Harry the h-pawn sits on h3 making defense of g2 and f3 vital.

White's defensive obligations throughout limited any sort of attack as 29.f3 was desperation. White had less clock time but had to win to force another game.

Needing only a draw, this comfortable round 4 victory with the Black pieces wrapped up first place for Magnus Carlsen. Wesley So (in round 3 of the finals) was the only player to defeat Carlsen in this rapid tournament.

HeMateMe: Why doesn't white play an early h4 to prevent black's h pawn from causing such trouble?

I think it may have collided with So's positional sense. 16.h4 would weaken the white squares around the king considerably, offering the square g4 to both the knight and the bishop.
