Feb-26-25  stone free or die: Where's <Tab>?

In 1920 there wasn't a <Yugoslavia>, which only came into existence in 1922 (as the <Kingdom of Yugoslavia>.

In 1920 it was officially know, under it's first post-WW1 name, as <Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes>.

Of course, being a pragmatist, I would accept Yugoslavia with a little fuzziness on the edges.

Feb-26-25  areknames: <sfod> yeah, my first reaction was just like yours, there was no <Yugoslavia> in 1920. Maybe the date isn't accurate?

In any event, nice little game with an entertaining mating net at the end. After 10..Be6 Black has no problems.

Not officialy no, but for CG I think it's perfectly acceptable.

I don't know if it's true but <Yugoslavia was first mentioned in 1849>:

Feb-27-25  stone free or die: Aside- can anybody enlighten me as to what the <Source> for the game is, i.e.

<Perpetual Check> ?

Is it a website, a periodical, what? And when? And where? Finally, is it available online or elsewhere?

Retireborn: <stone free> Vukovic was a writer and "Perpetual Check" sounds like the title of a book he may have written. That's just specualation though.

His wiki page says he has a mating pattern named after him, not sure if it is one on your list.

Feb-27-25  stone free or die: Thanks for that hint, <retireborn>. I'll check <worldcat.org> to search his publications.

I definitely have the <Vukovic Mate> on my list:

It's related to the <Arabian Mate> of course, as this position can end in either:

<Black to move>

(I moved the White king to make the Arabian "purer")

Here's a quote from over on <ChessTempo> as to the origins of the name:

<V.V. Arabian is named after V.Vukovic, who wrote the book where Tisdell first found it (Art of Attack in Chess).>

https://old.chesstempo.com/chess-fo...

I found it in Tisdell first, only later consulting Vukovic's <Art of Attack in Chess>. Richard wisely turned the awkward <V.V. Arabian> into <Vukovic>.

Feb-27-25  stone free or die: (Opps, my 2nd diagram is a bit of a ludicrous start - just put the rook elsewhere on the 7th to make it more plausible.)
