  takebackok: Look up Thursday, ok 25. Rxf6+ Kxf6 26. e5+ Kf7 27. Qxb7+ Qc7 now still thinking.
Jun-12-25  Walter Glattke: 25.Rxf6+ Kxf6 26.e5 Na3+ 27.bxa3 dxe6 28.fxe6 Qb4+ 29.Nb3 Rd7 30.Qf6+ Ke8 31.Bxh7 Bd5 32.Bg6+ Kd8 33.N2d4 (Kd7 Nf4) a5 34.Nxe6+ Kd7 35.Rxd5+ Kc6 36.Rc5+ Kb7 37. Qf3+ Ka7 38.Be3+ mate soon
Jun-12-25  Mayankk: 25 Rxf6+ Kxf6 26 e5+ is not too hard to spot. White has pried open the King's defences, and will soon grab the Black Bishop at b7 to also end up materially superior. Not often do you get to do that simultaneously.

It then gets a bit murky, as you would expect from a Thu puzzle. 26... dxe5 27 fxe5+ Kxe5 seems like suicide. 26... dxe5 27 fxe5+ Qxe5 28 Qxb7 still looks dead lost with the White Rook soon to grab the open f file.

So that leaves 26... Ke7/Kf7/Kg7 27 Qxb7+ Rc7 28 exd6+ etc. Not a quick win but a very likely one at this stage.

Jun-12-25  Walter Glattke: Correction. 25.Rxf6+ Kxf6 26.Qg5+ Kf7 27.e5 all one move number later
Jun-12-25  mel gibson: I got the first ply right but I didn't see the whole line.

Stockfish 17 says:

25. Rxf6+

(25. Rxf6+ (1.Rxf6+ Kxf6 2.e5+ Ke7 3.Qxb7+ Qc7 4.Qh1 Kd7 5.f5 Nxe5 6.Bxa6 Qb6 7.fxe6+ Kc7 8.Bxc8 Rxc8 9.Qxh7+ Kb8 10.e7 Qb7 11.exf8Q Rxf8 12.Qh6 Rd8 13.b3 Qd7 14.Qe6 Qxe6 ) +8.26/45 601)

score for White + 8.26 depth 45.

Jun-12-25  Walter Glattke: 30.Re7 not Rd7 (32.Bxh7 Rxh7 33. Qxe6+ Re7 34.Qf6+ Rf7 35.e6)
Jun-12-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: The king thinks this line is good: 25. Rxf6+ Kxf6 26. e5+ dxe5 27. Qg5+ Kf7 28. Bxh7 and now due to the threat of 29. Bg8#, B seems under a strong pressure. Eg. 28... Be7?? 29. Qg6+ Kf8 30. Qg8#. Or 28... Bg7 29. Qg6+ Ke7 30. Qxg7+ (Kd8 Nd6#) Kd6 31. Nb3+... Another B move: 28... Bd6 29. Bg6+ Kf8 30. Qf6+ Kg8 31. Qf7+ Kh8 32. Qh7# or even 28... Red8 29. Qg6+ Ke7 30. Qxe6#.
Jun-12-25  King.Arthur.Brazil: In the game line, the king is still tempted by refusing the B, following with: <25...Kxf6 26. e5+ Kf7> 27. Qg5 dxe5 28. Bxh7 exd4 29. Bg6+ Kg8 30. Bf5+ Bg7 31. Rg1 Rc7 32. Qg6... I believe that W has enough material to exploit B♔ exposition.

Breunor: 25 Rxf6 ch was screaming to be played. First 3 moves seems to me to be pretty easy to see.

Jun-13-25  James J. Henderson: If I'm reading correctly, Vetoshko was nine years old when this game was played.
Jun-13-25  Oxspawn: <If I'm reading correctly, Vetoshko was nine years old when this game was played.> We age, but we don't necessarily improve. I was one day younger when I played this through yesterday, and today I failed again.

Dionysius1: Hi <James J. Henderson>. Yes, indeed, 9 years old. In that variation of the Sicilian the first 14 moves are just "setting up the pieces". After that things seem to go progressively downhill for him.

Something a bit more vigorous might have helped around then. Eg the other knight to e5, threatening Nxd4 and Nxf3, forcing White to pause a little in his kingside buildup, and maybe 15.b4 getting on with it and again forcing White to do something a bit defensive.

These opposite castled king positions in the Sicilian seem to be all about "devil take the hindmost" rather than building up the perfect configuration before attacking.

He was FIDE 1840 about this time, and 2200 by the time he was 12.
