Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-25-06  Everett: Did Bronstein lose on time here, or resign? He seems to have chances for perpetual at least with Rxd1+ and Qh5
Mar-25-06  whithaw: After 39...Rd1, white is mating and black has to give up the queen. For example, 40.Rd1 Qh5 41.Bf6 threatens mate on the back rank, and there isn't anything that can be done.
Mar-25-06  Everett: Thanks <Whithaw>, I only analyzed 41.Rd8+ and 41.b6
May-25-08  newzild: What a cool game! An awesome fight between the two crusty old guys. Everett: I would say Bronstein resigned, as there is no real chance of a perpetual. ie: 39...Rxd1+ 40.Rxd1 Qh5 41.Bf6! and black is toast.
May-21-09  Dr. J: 34 ... Qxd8 seems to give some drawing chances, e.g., 35 Rxd8 Bxe1 36 Rd3 Bf2 37 Rf1 (not 37 Rb3(?) Rb4 38 Rxb4 cxb4 39 Rh3 Kd6) Rb4+ 38 Kc2 c4. Perhaps Bronstein was looking for a win in time pressure?
Oct-31-09  Everett: <newzild> little late.

Is there a direct answer to 24..0-0 followed by 25..Qh8?

Oct-31-09  MaxxLange: It's fascinating how many really strong USSR players, like Kholmov, there were, who never became famous or even known in the West.
