Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-29-24  goodevans: Noddy waited to take the pawn on f7 until it became a bad move.

19.Nxf7 would have been fabulous and 21.Nxf7 would have been pretty good but instead 21.Nc5? was just awful. It should have been met with 21...Qxd4 but Navara let him off the hook with 21...Qc7 and White had the advantage back.

By the time Abdusattorov played 23.Bxf7+ it was far from best. 23.Re5 would have been much better or even 23.Qe3. Then with 25.Nxb7 what little plus White had left was gone. Did he overlook the very smart 25...Ne2+! ?

White's next three moves were all suboptimal and 28...Bh7 would have given Black a big, maybe winning, advantage. Fortunately for Abdusattorov, Navara was ready with the biggest blunder of all, 28.Rxf7??. No coming back from that one.

An exciting game but hardly a classic.

Feb-29-24  Whitehat1963: Excellent, complex game!

Honza Cervenka: 29.Rd6 was a nasty surprise for David. I guess that he was well aware that 28...Bh7 is winning but he apparently thought that 28...Rxf7 wins as well missing the point of unexpected and objectively weak 28.Kh1. David was prepared for 28.Qh5 with intention 28...Bh7 29.Ne6 Bxf2+ 30.Kxf2 Qxf7+ 31.Qxf7 Rxf7+ 32.Kg1 Re8 with advantage, and he probably thought that 28.Kh1 was played with intention to avoid capture of f2 with check not seeing the trap based on weak back rank tactics.

Honza Cervenka: I can imagine quite well how David is feeling now, as I have just lost two games in row in the Prague team championship from winning position by missing a tactical trick of my opponent in time pressure before the first time control.
