  FSR: Marvin played plausible moves but got mated off the board in 18 moves! Where did he go wrong? The position after 8.e4 has been seen thousands of times. Best, but not the most common, is 8...dxc4! 9.Bxc4 e5! with close to equality (+0.2 Stockfish 16.1, depth 37).

More common is the somewhat inferior 8...dxe4 9.Nxe4 Nxe4 10.Bxe4, as Rogan played. Now Stockfish gives as best 10...c5 (+0.4). It says that 10...e5 is only slightly inferior (+0.41) even though it drops a pawn to 11.dxe5 Nxe5 12.Nxe5 Bxe5 13.Bxh7+! Kxh7 14.Qh5+ Kg8 15.Qxe5. Black has opposite-colored bishops to console him. Larsen in <How to Open a Chess Game> suggested that Black play 5...Bb4!? 6.a3 Bd6 and then go for a better version of this line, playing ...Qd3! at the end; the point is that since White has played a3, he can no longer respond with b3. See https://www.chessgames.com/perl/che... (two White wins and six draws). I tried for that in V Pupols vs F Rhine, 1997, but my opponent played 6.Bd3 rather than 6.a3. I should then have played 6...Nbd7 or 6...O-O rather than 6...Ne4?!

Most common, but bad, is what Rogan played: 10...Nf6 11.Bc2 c5 (best) 12.Bg5! Here Black's position is already critical! He <must> play 12...h6!, when he should still be able to survive after 13.Bh4 cxd4 14.Qd3 (or 14.Qxd4 Be7) Re8!, when he can head for a worse but tenable ending after 15.Nxd4 Be5 16.Rad1 Bxd4 17.Qxd4 Qxd4 18.Rxd4 e5 19.Rd6 Be6 20.b3 Rac8 21.f4 exf4 22.Bxf6 (22.Rxf4 b5!) gxf6 23.a4 (23.Rxf4?! b5!=) Rc5 24.Rxf4 Kg7 (+0.5).

Unfortunately Rogan played 12...cxd4, when after 13.Qxd4! Black is already lost (+3.2)! After 13...Be7 14.Qh4! his best try would have been the abject 14...h5 15.Ne5 Qc7 16.Rae1 Rd8 17.Re3. After 14...h6 15.Bxh6! the "Finnish" only took three more moves.
