Sally Simpson: The DEVA (Delayed EVans Accepted.) In Hinduism A Deva is a "heavenly being", "anything of excellence."

(that is me falling in line with this site's manifesto - 'To Entertain and Educate.')

Stonehenge: Does A Bendigo mean someone from Bendigo?

Sally Simpson: That is interesting Stonehenge because a quick search revealed there is such a place called 'Bendigo' (well spotted - this falls under the to Entertain and Educate category.)

The Falkirk Herald say they took the game from the 'Australasian' and they have Black as 'A Bendigo Amateur' and I've been tripped up reading it as an amateur called Bendigo. (all part of the Chandler manifesto - to cock up and confuse.)

Correction slip sent to change it to NN which is a pity as I was looking forward to some Australian Dingo puns.

Sally Simpson: The Australasian, April 13th, 1895 to the Falkirk Herald May 29 1895. Considering the loading and unloading and transport to and from the docks etc 45-46 days was pretty quick for them days. The ship carrying The 'Australasian' most likely went the through the Suez Canal (opened in 1869)

The Bendingo Chess Club: The crest is a White Knight, a Black Rook and a steel poppet head for the mining of gold.

This thread is a fine example of 'Educate, Entertain and teamwork. '
