Dec-09-24 | | Cassandro: A Kamikaze Attack for Ding here could be Bxh6?!. After ..gxh6 White plays Nxe5 and he has two pawns for the piece and Black's King is exposed. Go for it, Ding! ;) |
Dec-09-24
 | | Open Defence: I would rather take the Mariah Carey Christmas song over all the Ding puns at the official stream |
Dec-09-24 | | VipinRamola: <Cassandro: A Kamikaze Attack for Ding here could be Bxh6?!. After ..gxh6 White plays Nxe5 and he has two pawns for the piece and Black's King is exposed. Go for it, Ding! ;)> As I told you, you heard it here first. |
Dec-09-24 | | Cassandro: <Open Defence> Just not Celine Dion's Titanic song. That's a bridge too far. |
Dec-09-24 | | siamesedream: Giri and Leko likes Ding's positon:

Dec-09-24
 | | Open Defence: <Cassandro:Just not Celine Dion's Titanic song.> but it will go on.... |
Dec-09-24 | | whiteshark: 16...Nd7 and the machine starts twitching slightly. |

 | | igiene: You should never comment on a game before it's finished. It's like passing judgment on Leonardo's Mona Lisa before he painted the smile. |
Dec-09-24 | | optimal play: Ding has a nice position but he’s coming down to 40 mins with 24 moves still to play. We don’t want to see another blunder under time pressure like last night. Gukesh still has an hour, so he’s a bit more comfortable. |
Dec-09-24
 | | halito27: I'm thinking d2 might be the best square for the queen: eyes the h6 and a5 pawns and supports an eventual d4 push. Black could play ...Nc5 and then d4 comes in with gain of tempo. Just seems like d2 is a good square for the queen, IMO. |
Dec-09-24
 | | halito27: Haha - Ding played it as I was composing my comment. Did I just get my first GM norm? ;-P |
Dec-09-24 | | marcwordsmith: Hoo boy <VipinRamola>! You DID say it first and I must salute you! Looks like Ding is setting up that sac. |
Dec-09-24 | | marcwordsmith: ok then <Halito> I guess I must salute you too ... |
Dec-09-24 | | optimal play: Yes Qd2 looks good.
I like Ding’s position more and more.
It’s not a winning position yet but he has good play. I just hope he can finish it off. |
Dec-09-24
 | | Open Defence: Ding might sac the exchange |
Dec-09-24
 | | moronovich: Considering the seriuos sitation for Ding I really like his opening choice and the position on the board (after Qd2). But too early for Bxh6sac, for the moment. But sometimes the threat is stronger than the execution ;) |
Dec-09-24
 | | Open Defence: White could get a center pawn roller |
Dec-09-24 | | marcwordsmith: The grandmaster commentators are all saying that Qd2 was to set up the d4 push, not the sac on h6. |
Dec-09-24 | | Cassandro: Black's pieces are not harmoniously placed, and it's like one can sense there are some hidden tactical possibilities for White to explore here. What a match we're having! I've thoroughly enjoyed this so far. |
Dec-09-24 | | whiteshark: white ♖:♘♙♙ sac: 17. … Nc5 18. d4 Nd3 19. d5 Nxe1 20. Qxe1 Nd4 21. Nbxd4 exd4 22. Nxd4 Bh7 23. Qxa5 Bg5 24. Bxg5 hxg5 25. Qd2 Be4 26. Bxe4 Rxe4 |
Dec-09-24
 | | halito27: I'm not listening to the GMs but when I was looking at Qd2 it was because it supported d4 and possibly other useful lines. Presonally, I think the pressure on the a5 pawn is probably more relevant than the h6 sac, which I can't quite visualize. |
Dec-09-24
 | | Open Defence: yes <halito27> the a5 pawn is either hanging or lost in most variations |
Dec-09-24
 | | halito27: Yeah, Gukesh's pieces are sort of colliding with each other. Ding has him in a bit of a bind right now. Of course, this is just a temporary discomfort; Ding's going to have to exploit it with an eventual break, but it's hard to see how. |
Dec-09-24
 | | moronovich: Sometimes, like now were Ding is trailing,it is easier, from a psychologically point of view, to play for a win. |
Dec-09-24 | | marcwordsmith: It's cool that the camera shows both players' expressions. My sense right now is that both of them feel Ding is winning. |
