Clue: Weaken g6 so Qxg6+ or Rxg6+ becomes a serious option.

Sally Simpson: That is it <moronovich> Puzzle No.14 in CHESS April 2025 I'd like to think I'd get that OTB having noticed 1.Rxg6+ fxg6 2.Rg1 ideas fail to 2...Rf1+.

However Puzzle No.11 I nearly messed up because I thought a winning line only drew.

J. Malek - A.Kaplan, Titled Tuesday 2025 (White to play)

I thought the obvious 1.Nxc5 dxc5 2.d6 fails 2...Ka4! White cannot avoid the a5 stalemate. 3.d7 a5!

But...

...1.Nxc5 dxc5 2.a4! wins (I missed 2.a4 - only saw it last night when preparing to use this position for the kids coaching.)

Instead I went for the King march around to pick up the d6 pawn. Black can only move Ka4-Ka5-Ka4 if they try Ka4 and a5 then Nb6 is mate.

After taking the d6 pawn.

You have to time correctly, if necessary losing a tempo with the King. 1. Kc6 Ka4 2. Kb6 a5 (only move) 3. Nxc5 mate. Which is the answer in the magazine.
