Nov-05-05  vonKrolock: THE COTTINGLEY MATCH - A TRUE STORY?!
Amongst so many true people (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, Gardner, the Wright family etc) and historic details, the british film "Fairy Tale - A True Story" presents also takes from a Chess game (part of a 'match'?!) supposed to occur in a pub. Theme 'Chess' appears in the film only when it's arriving to a decisive part, with the fairy-photographer girls being invited to attend a book-launching in London as special Conan Doyle guests - then following words are exchanged in the gare (just before the train parts), between Arthur Wright (played by actor Paul MacGann) and his wife Polly (Phoebe Nicholls) - he will stay at Cottingley while she goes to London:

SHE: "Could I say please?!"
HE: "What good is that gonna do? <...> "Anyway, I have a match to play, the manor to attend, so dont' worry about me. You and the girls enjoy Yourselves." SHE: "Good luck with the tournament!"

(note that the words 'match' and 'tournament' appears, but not yet WHAT will be played!)

Later in the film, in a lively tringled action (a theatre in London where Houdiny is performing an escapade, the empty (and enchanted!?) Wright house in Cottingley, and a pub in the same city), a Chess game is presented with enough details to reproduce the opening moves) or maybe even ALL the score, if someone bother to link the parts showed!?: A. Wright vs S. Chalker, Cottingley 1917, Vienna Game - 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Na6 3.Na4 Bc5 4.Nxc5 Nxc5 <...> later, a complicated open middle game position, and finally an attack for mate, 1-0 · some questions: (a) Arthur Wright was the strongest Chess-player of Cottingley? (b) He played a ‘match’ in 1917 against a Sidney Chalker <...” the undisputed Champion of this county; and revered by all chess-playing community in every major town within the radius of hundred miles, including Sheffield!"> ?!

PS: The film is very nice and entertaining!
