| May-14-05 | | WorldChampeen: The book he authored "The Mammoth Chess Book" is published also as "Chess Strategy and Tactics"; the only thing is games and openings are indexed, but if I want to reread the part about "Marathon Blitz"?? I believe, it was 500 games, in 3 days and he had to win at least 75% for it to be a record, Guiness or whatever, and he won about 85%. Exclan Book.  | | Sneaky: I have a great little opening manual by Burgess called "The Nescafé(™) Frappe Attack" -- it outlines an absolutely outrageous way for White to go ballistic against anybody who plays the Benko gambit. The mainline goes:
1. d4 ♘f6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 4. cxb5 a6 5. ♘c3 axb5 6. e4 b4 7. ♘b5 d6 8. ♗c4 g6 9. e5 dxe5 10. d6 exd6 11. ♗g5
click for larger viewWhite is down two pawns, but Black's problems seem almost unsurmountable. It's a great book that got me studying this very tactical opening for a long time. In the end I concluded what Burgess concluded years after the booklet was published: that the Nescafé Frappe Attack is "not quite sound." Still, I think it's perfectly playable anywhere below GM level as the problems black faces OTB are such a headache. More info: Opening Explorer P.S. Somebody must be wondering by now, "Nescafé Frappe? What the...?" The only thing Burgess says about it is that it was named thusly for "obscure reasons." In my mind's eye I imagine a late night analysis session fueled by coffee, and when the coffee ran out, the players turned to a rusty old can of powdered caffeine. |

| | Sneaky: It is a good weapon because it takes the Benko player out of their game. Benko players tend to be endgame oriented positional players. They aren't interesting in mating attacks--just a way to ground you down into a losing endgame. They are normally the kind of person who is afraid of gambits (both offering and accepting) but they make an exception for the Benko Gambit because they've discovered how it's virtually impossible for White to hang onto his material. With the Frappe Attack you throw the gauntlet back to Black, and make him make the difficult decisions. What's more, if Black tries to deviate early from the mainline, there are wonderfully sharp attacking lines. I won a tournament game once in under 20 moves, by making bold pawn pushes in the center which pushed Black right off the board. If I can dig it up I'll put it on the Benko Gambit (A57) page. |

 | | FSR: I highly recommend his book <The Quickest Chess Victories of All Time>. You can buy it cheap on Amazon from various sellers. Entertaining games; playing through them will teach you a ton about the openings and tactics. Seriously, everyone should get this book. |
