Jonathan Sarfati: More on the sad news http://www.chesschat.org/showthread...
Jan-22-17  ozmikey: Sad to hear. I got to know him a bit when he'd just started playing seriously (in the mid-nineties); he was one of a crowd of Victorian recent ex-juniors who often came to Sydney or Canberra playing in the bigger opens. Back then, his peers (Simon Rutherford, Jeremy O'Carroll, Michael Baron etc.) were much stronger than he was, but he improved very quickly. A nice bloke too, with a big smile and a keen sense of humour. RIP.

Jonathan Sarfati: Yes, he was a late developer, who improved a lot in adulthood so much that he won the 2008 Melbourne Club Championships with 8/9 and a TPR of 2500. Elsewhere, he won by mating with ♔♗♘ v ♔, which has eluded even a GM and a women's world champ.
Jul-28-18  SvetlanaBabe: Malcolm Pyke was probably the most accomplished cheater that the Australian chess community has produced. I've lost count of how often I saw him repeatedly sitting outside smoking his 'roll your owns' as he played his games receiving advice from his manipulated and pathetic minions. The chess community of Australia is better now that this parasite has been eradicated from the local scene.
Jul-29-18  SvetlanaBabe: I forgot to mention, in his later years Malcolm became known as "Fritz" to a cohort of local chess players because he often consulted this chess engine during games! Fact: The Melbourne Chess Club apparently still has a tournament in honour of this cheat but then again their ex president is responsible for this violent incident http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pac...

Jonathan Sarfati: <SvetlanaBabe:> Do you have any actual evidence? The people who knew him and wrote on ChessChat thought he was an honorable player over the board.
