Dec-02-08  andymac: According to this game: Leticia Avalos vs Niloofar Nayab, 2008 Ms Nayab is rated > 1600. She does not play as if she is in these games...

Elo-performance: 763 [??]
Dec-19-08  just a kid: Candidate for the worst player ever.
Dec-19-08  arifattar: Wow. Just went through some of her games. And just did a google search. She was representing Afghanistan at the Olympics. [unknown player]

Surely, Afghanistan has better players than this to represent them at the Olympics. Just can't understand.

Dec-19-08  just a kid: Seems like 0 is a good ELO for her.
Jan-12-09  ruzon: <arifattar: Surely, Afghanistan has better players than this to represent them at the Olympics. Just can't understand.>

Well, she was probably born in the years following the 1980 Soviet invasion, and they didn't invade to teach chess to the locals. Then the Taliban took over, and they're not known for teaching girls to read, let alone play chess.

Now the country is run by warlords, there's American troops battling al-Qaida, and the farmers are growing poppies to turn into opium, because that's the only way they can feed their families. I'm surprised anyone in Afghanistan was able to organize a women's chess team to take outside the country.

So let's all give Ms. Nayab a break and consider whether anyone on CG would even be playing chess under such circumstances.

Jan-12-09  Morphischer: Should change her name from Niloofar, to Nil-so-far.
Jan-12-09  dbquintillion: I'm with ruzon. Generally I'm all for good-natured teasing of awful play on this site. But given what Afghanistan has been through in the past 40 years I think its pretty neat that this woman got a chance to represent her country at the Olympiad, even if she was totally outmatched.

Phony Benoni: I agree with those who find it admirable that a women's team from Afghanistan played at all. And Ms. Nayab was hardly the only outmatched player:
