Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-28-13  Abdel Irada: I wonder how many readers know that the popular Spanish name Alvarez actually comes from the Arabic الفارس (al-faris), and means "knight."

Looking back, it seems probable that this was one of the names that came over with the Moors when they conquered southern Spain and called it Al-Andalus, known to Europe as Andalusia.

The Arabs in Spain who didn't flee the Reconquista in 1492 were forced to convert to Catholicism and become loyal subjects of Ferdinand and Isabella. At the time, many of the world's foremost mariners were Arab, so it is very probable that a number of them accompanied Columbus' expedition later that year.

Certainly this does not seem improbable, given the number of Alvarezes in Mexico and Latin America today.

May-16-16  WickedPawn: I'm afraid to disagree.

The ending 'ez' in Spanish means 'son of' as the ending 'sson' in Scandinavian languages, 'Mac' in Scotland', 'O' in Ireland, 'oglu' in Turkish, 'Beni' in Arabic origins, etc.

Álavarez means 'son of Álvaro' as González is 'son of Gonzalo', López 'son of Lope' and so on.
