Tabanus: I have no proof this guy played chess, but there's only one with the initials J. S.:

1924: John Sherman Knaur III, b. 7 March 1924 in Dallas, Texas (Texas Birth Certificates)

1944: John Sherman Knaur (1924-1995), pilot in the Army Air Corps - European front (Ancestry.com, Public Member Photos)

1951: J S Knaur, Jr, plays in US Open in Fort Worth, Texas (info Phony Benoni)

1952: John S Knaur Jr, Fort Worth, Texas, USA (City Directory)

1995: John Sherman Knaur Jr, b. 7 March 1924, d. 20 April 1995 (US SS Appl. Claims Index)

Fort Worth Star Telegram, 22 April, 1995, p. 37:

<NORTH RICHLAND HILLS -- John Sherman Knaur, Jr, 71, a retired aerospace engineer, died Thursday at home. --- Mr. Knaur was born in Dallas (Texas). He was a docent at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and was a volunteer for the elementary school's computer program. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II and served in the 348th Bomber Group. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church for many years.>

There's one other option: his father (1899-1970) was also named John Sherman Knaur and lived i Denison, not very far from Fort Worth. He would be <Sr.> then, but was called <Jr.> earlier - because <his> father was also named John Sherman Knaur! Finding a chess-playing J. S. Knaur after 1970 would settle the issue.

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> I'll do some looking around tonight to see if I can't at least make sure of Jr. vs. Sr.

When I first started the project I thought states would be sufficient, but it's becoming apparent city information is important for your work.

I'm thinking of doing some clean-up the rest of the year, and should at least add cities (where available) to the general player lists and the Help list. I'm reluctant to add them to crosstable for space considerations. The collection intros don't allow for more than about 500 players, and that's without city/state.

Tabanus: <PB> The Denison Press does not mention any Knaur in their lousy chess notes (in my online search). But then he was probably not a very strong player, with only 3 points in the US Open. The father was an inventor who sent in patents etc., that does sound like a chess player though.

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> And now that I actually look at the crosstable for Fort Worth 1951, I see that it specials <Jr.>. Strange; I usually don't do that; maybe it was because of the lack of a full name.

I'll still want to check that, though.

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> The published crosstable for Fort Worth 1951 ("Chess Life, August 5, 1951, page 5) and following rating list ("Chess Life", October 5, 1951, p.4) both have <J S Knaur, Jr., Fort Worth, Texas>, which confirms your findings.

He does not appear in the next few supplements, so was apparently a casual player who came out because the tournament was in his home town.

Tabanus: <PB> I'll leave it as is then.

<it's becoming apparent city information is important for your work.> It is indeed! Next project is W T Mayfield. Austin perhaps?

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> Note on page for W T Mayfield.
