WILLEM NICOLAAS DINGER †

These days, the Netherlands received news of the death of Willem Nicolaas Dinger, who died of the effects of lung cancer at the University Hospital in Groningen on the 18th of July. Dinger was one of the greatest in the Indonesian chess world, one of the two oldest members of the Surabaya Chess Club, undoubtedly many will be interested in his past. Mr. Dinger arrived in Indonesia in 1911. where he found his office in Surabaya. Shortly after, he became a member of the Surabaya Chess Club. He is also known as chess editor and chess critic of several Dutch-Indonesian daily newspapers, among others. since 1913 of the Surabaya Handelsblad. In June 1942, he was interned in Batavia by the Japanese, and in the camp - like so many - he contracted hunger edema, but it didn't look serious. After the liberation, however, his general practitioner considered admission to Tjikini hospital necessary. His state of health made it desirable for him to come to Holland urgently. and so he left on the 22nd of February. with the "Oranje". After a few months in the hospital of the Leidsche Academie, Dinger was transported to Groningen, where the famous professor Eerlang operated on the 12th of July, but the great physician, despite the most modern technique, could not save him. Dinger died July 18th and was intered in Hilversum. He leaves a spouse and three adult children. His youngest son died after 6 weeks of imprisonment under the Jap at the end of March in the prison Glodok In Batavia. In the hearts of his many Indonesian friends, also outside the chess world, Dinger a great place in. With him a balanced figure and a good man went, he rest in peace!
