Jan-21-16  ughaibu: To find the challenger to Kimura for the fourth term of the Meijin title, a complicated system was used. First a tournament of fifth to seventh-dan players was held to find four qualifiers. These four then joined twelve eighth-dan players and a further tournament was held to find the next stage of four qualifiers.

To then qualify for the next stage, each of these four had to win a three game match against Kimura himself. But with the advantage that Kimura played at half-lance handicap. That is, in odd numbered games Kimura gave the opponent a lance handicap and in even numbered games he played second, something like a game at knight odds then a game taking black.

The four qualifiers were Hagiwara, Ono, Hanada and Sakaguchi. They lost all the games except for Ono, who won his first game receiving a lance handicap. That's an 89% result for Kimura, against his strongest rivals, playing handicap matches.

How does that compare, for "dominance", with Morphy, Lasker, Tal, Fischer or Kasparov?

Jun-28-17  ughaibu: Last year Fujii Souta broke Kato Hifumi's 62 year standing record for youngest shogi professional. Since then he has won all his official games and is up to twenty nine consecutive wins. He's still only fourteen.
