Dec-21-12  Llawdogg: This guy set the world record for playing 46 games simultaneously while blindfolded. Amazing! Incredible!
Dec-21-12  TheFocus: <Llawdogg> That would be the 21st Century record.

20th century record: <One other notable blindfold record was set in 1960 by Koltanowski in San Francisco, when he played 56 consecutive blindfold games at a rate of 10 seconds a move. The exhibition lasted 9 hours with the result of 50 wins and 6 losses.>

Phony Benoni: I really wouldn't consider any number of <consecutive> blindfold games to qualify as a record compared to <simultaneous> blindfold games.

There are arguments that Najdorf's 45 and Janos Flesch 52 <simultaneous> games were not properly monitored, and that Koltanowski actually held the simultaneous record for a 34-board performance in 1937. I can't see it myself.

Dec-21-12  TheFocus: <Phony> Ah, "consecutive"? That doesn't count then.

hansj: Marc Lang is also the oldest blindfold player to do 30+ boards and remains very active in promoting blindfold chess. His amazing feats have been the subject of several TV documentaries.

hansj: The great players who have done 30+ board blindfold exhibitions are Alekhine (1), Koltanowski (2), Flesch (2), Najdorf(3),Lang(2), and Gareev(1)

hansj: The book Blindfold Chess History etc was published in 2009 (www.blindfoldchess.net)and gives excellent detail on GM Najdorfs 45 board exhibition in 1947. Those games were the best quality of any large blindfold exhibition. Previously there were few details about Najdorfs exhibitions and even Kasparov got it wrong in his great predecessors series of books (on Najdorf).
