The committee met at the Thistle Company's Cafe on the 8th inst., Mr. Harlin, the vice-president occupying the chair.

It was decided that in the handicap tourney, for which entries are to close on the 15th inst, there should be three prizes of the respective values of £3 3s., £2 2s., and £1 1s., together with a valuable chess-work as a consolation price, for which all losers shall be eligible as candidates, and which shall be awarded on the cutting-down system.

Mr.Brockelbank announced the names of the following additional competitors:- Mr. H. W. Apperly, Mr. E. Clarkson (late of New Zealand), Mr. C. Haviland, Mr. D. R. Hay, <Mr. Arnold Lilly>, and Mr. Quiroga.>

Apr-12-16  optimal play: <<<MELBOURNE CHESS CLUB.>

A meeting of the committee was held at the clubroom on the 26th inst., the following being the members present:- Mr. Harlin (vice-president) in the chair; Mr. Burns (hon. treasurer); Mr. Arneil (hon. secretary); Mr. Chivers, Mr. Hodgson, and Mr. Loughran.

It was resolved 'That a Championship Tourney, to be open to all Victorian chess players, shall be held under the auspices of the club; that this tourney shall be played under the Praxis rules, and with a time limit of 15 moves per hour; that the entrance fee shall be half-a-guinea; that entries shall close on Saturday, March 14; and that play shall begin on Monday, March 16.

It was further resolved that subscriptions should be invited to form a prize fund, five guineas of which should be expended in the purchase of a gold medal to be awarded to the winner of the tourney; and that the balance, together with the entrance fees, should be divided into six parts, of which the winner of the tourney should receive three, the second two, and the third one.

The following subscriptions have been already promised to the prize fund:- <Mr. Arnold Lilly>, £3 3s.; Mr. Chivers, £1 1s.; Mr. Hodgson, .£1 1s.; and Mr. Loughran, £1 1s.>
