Sep-30-19  Nosnibor: Victor Hextall Lovell was born in Leicester 1889 and died on the 23rd April 1940.His father Alderman Lovell founded a confectionary firm in Leicester of which Lovell junior became a partner. He became Secretary of the Leicestershire Chess Club in 1920 and retained the position until his death. During his chess career he defeated T.H.Tyler, A J Mackenzie,J W Broadbent,G Abrahams,H E Price,Rupert Cross and many of these more than once.He restricted his play to league and county matches and it was felt that he would have made a good account of himself in national tournaments. He won the Leicestershire Championship on a record 15 occasions.

Tabanus: <(born Jun-31-1889> is solely based on the 1939 England and Wales Register, Leicester, where he is a "Wholesale Confectioner Sugar" living in Dovedale Road. The probate calendar of 1940 also has 42 Dovedale Road, Leicester. Birth index has however b. "Jan-Feb-Mar" 1889.

MissScarlett: Hmmm, if he died at 50 he makes my list, 51, not.

MissScarlett: It just occurred that June 31st isn’t a kosher date.

Tabanus: I had to look again. It indeed says "31 June 89".

In the 1891 Census for England, which was meant to be taken on the night of 5 April 1891, Victor was 2 years old. Perhaps 31 January...

MissScarlett: Seems the most logical inference. Let's go with that, subject to the usual provisos.

MissScarlett: <Nosnibor>, you posted a simul loss of Lovell's to Atkins here (Joseph Henry Blackburne (kibitz #236)), but there's a mistake in the notation with 21...Rf1. Could you correct this?
Mar-27-20  Nosnibor: <MissScarlett> 21...Rf7 is the correct move. I mentioned before that Atkins also played Lovell in an odds game conceding a Rook which appears to be the only game on record of Atkins giving an odds start.

MissScarlett: Ok, submitted. As <Site>, I went with <Leicester ENG> in preference to <Leicestershire Chess Club>; is that right?
Mar-27-20  Nosnibor: <MissScarlett> That is correct.Thankyou.

Aug-27-22  Nosnibor: The following game was played at board 1 in a County match between Northamptonshire and Leicestershire at Rugby on the 15th December1914. Lovell`s opponent was a real live peer of the realm ( of the "Haw by Jove, what, dammit! " type) who brought along his own ivory chessmen. The match had been in progress scarcely an hour when an impressive servitor appeared to announce with ceremony: "My Lord, dinner is ready at 7.30." "Damn my dinner!" said his Lordship ,not to be lured from the board by fleshpots; and dinner had to await the conclusion of his Lordship`s chess, as the Armada for Drake`s bowls.) Aug-27-22  Nosnibor: I should have posted 0-1 for the preceding game .Apologies. The game does appear to be a bit of a mismatch but I thought it was interesting from a historical point of view. Shortly after this game Lovell was called up to serve in the First World War.
