OLD SWORDS and YOUNG HOPEFULS: Wolfgang Block (fourth from left at the table in the center) at the beginning of his chess career (that has later resulted in becoming FIDE Arbiter and winning the 15th German Derby of Senior Players in 2016), namely sitting here among his colleagues of the board of the renowned "Elmshorner Schachclub von 1896" (ESC) way back in The ROARING SEVENTIES on December 1st, 1974, in the clubhouse "Hamburger Hof" in Elmshorn in the German Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein. The members of the most honorary assembly on this historical document (from left to right): Adolf Schädlich, record master of the ESC; Wolfgang Hahn, first chairman of the ESC; Herbert Kröger, second chairman of the ESC; Wolfgang Block, youth officer of the ESC; René Gralla, press officer of the ESC - and club champion two years later in 1976 - ; Peter Seyer, secretary of the ESC; Wilhelm Preuss, senior master and honorary captain of the ESC; in the background: Mr. and Mrs. Stedtnitz who were the landlords of the hotel and clubhouse "Hamburger Hof" in Elmshorn's Mühlenstrasse near the train station.
