Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-01-24  Alan McGowan: This player should be shown as M. Höflein (or Hoeflein). Newspaper reports of the day on the tournament entrants show M. Höflein, Bamberg, a city he was long associated with.

His game against Weiss is shown in the Deutsche Schachzeitung 1904, p266-7, and his name is indexed as Höflein, M.

A newspaper report of 22 July 1904 indicated he had withdrawn from the Coburg event (Ausgetreten ist Höflein). His name does not appear in the crosstable for Hauptturnier 'C'.

There is more about the tournament at Game Collection: Coburg 1904

Moses Höflein was born 5 December 1866 at Wüstensachsen. There are references to his professional titles of Rechtsanwalt (lawyer) and, later, Justizrat.

Aside from his strong connection to the Bamberg CC, Höflein was also a noted problemist and cc player. He won the 6th International cc tournament, organized by the Deutsche Schachzeitung and played from October 1935 to 1938. He scored 14/17; +12 =4 -1, finishing ahead of Keres (12). He was =2nd in the 7th tournament.

After being banned from regular club activity, he participated in three Jewish chess championships of Germany, and other cc tournaments. He escaped persecution and ended up in the Philippines, winning an event there in 1942 when in his 70s.

His name is remembered in Bamberg with a Blitz tournament. See https://orchajim.de/2023/07/27/sieb...
