Chess Player Killed.
Mr. Saml. Walter Billings, a young Cheltenham solicitor, who won the first prize in the first-class amateur chess tourney at Glasgow five years ago, has been killed in action while fighting in the ranks of the University and Public Schools Batr? When quite a youth he won the Cheltenham championship, and repeated the feat five times. He also led Cheltenham against Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, Oxford University, and other strong clubs on many occasions. He competed in the British championship, but against Blackburne, and other strong exponents, he was somewhat outclassed. At the Cheltenham congress in 1913 he had a good score.
