<We are glad to notice that German Chess players are taboo in the City of London Chess Club, whatever their former status, influence, authority, patronage, etc., may have been. Following the example of our gracious King, who has authorised the removal of odious emblems in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, the City of London Chess Club has ignominiously removed the names of the Duke Arthur of Saxe Coburg, Emanuel Lasker and Tarrasch from the list of honorary members of the Club, and whatever we feel we are indebted to in the past to the labours of Lasker and Tarrasch in the cause of Chess, the obligations are utterly negatived by the present devilish ferocity that is exhibited by the German race - every man, woman and child - towards ourselves at the present time. No self-respecting Britisher can entertain or ever will entertain feelings other than scorn and bitterness towards the three names in question. Particularly in regard to Lasker, who has enjoyed England's hospitality for many years past, and to which country he owes a very large share of his present position in the Chess world, shall we all agree in cutting the bonds of friendship, and turn with loathing to a man who has gone out of his way - since the war began - to pour out anathemas on us in the Press of Germany, by defiling the sacred name of Caissa, and attempting to utilise his knowledge of the game, to further the progress of his country, and - foolish fool - to suppose that the cause of Germany will be thereby assisted. Matters have gone too far into the zone of Hell by the Teutonic fiends for us to show the slightest moderation in this matter.> |
