Natalia Fedorovna Ivashina began playing chess seriously in 1935, establishing herself as a perennial Kuibyshev champion. She shared 1st in the 1936 USSR Women's Championship qualification tournament and placed 3rd in the 1936 USSR Women's Championship semi-final, earning a spot in the 1937 USSR Women's Championship.

In 1947 Ivashina took place in the unusual "three-family tournament" event, which pitted players from three families against each other: the Ivashins, Zhoglevs and Karabekovs. She scored shared 3rd on 6th board to help her family to victory. Ivashina also shared 1st in the 1947 RSFSR Women's Championship and shared 2nd in the 1949 championship.

Natalia Ivashina is an engineer by occupation. She is a member of the Krylya Sovetov sports society and has a 2nd category rating. Sister of Alexey Ivashin.
