Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-13-20  wordfunph: from Chess Life 1985 June..

<If you had to pick a point in time when the whole thing began, it might be the night ten years ago when Ed Labate read a book and dropped out of college. The book, Anthony Saidy and Norman Lessing's The World of Chess, was supposed to be some light reading for his night job as a security guard, while he attended Santa Ana College.

Ed can be notoriously slow on the uptake, and although he owned about 600 chess books at the time, he never realized that he had an obsession with chess — until that fateful night. His mother, however, was quicker. Upset by Ed's withdrawal from college and by his fast-growing chess book collection, which had begun to take over her house, she exploded one day. "You'e buying more and more books," she said, "but you don't even know what you've got!"

"Test me," Labate replied coolly.

So he left the room while she removed one book from the hundreds. Then he returned and named the missing volume by title and author in less than one minute.

Ed Labate knows his chess books.>
