<DEATH OF AUSTRALIAN CHESS PLAYER.

MR. C. G. STEELE KILLED AT MELBOURNE.

The last mail from Australia brings news of the death of Mr. Charles Gilbert Steele, a member of the Melbourne Chess Club, and one of the leading Victorian players. Mr. Steele lost his footing on the platform of the Balaclava (Melbourne) railway station, and fell in front of an approaching train. Before it could be stopped the second carriage had passed over Mr. Steele, who was so badly injured that he died before he could be removed. He had resided in Melbourne for more than 20 years, had held the Victorian chess championship three times, and played regularly in the inter-State matches. English players will remember him competing in the British Championship at Southsea in 1923, when he scored 3 1/2 points, two of these at the expense of Messrs. H. Jacobs and R. H. V. Scott. He was a member of the staff of the Commonwealth Audit Office, was 44 years of age, and leaves a widow. Mrs. Steele accompanied her husband to England last year, and many friends she then made will sympathise with her in her loss.>
