LOL!

This is not true. I made this up as a joke to show that even Lasker was not above making an excuse for losing.

Jackson Whipps Showalter

<TheFocus: I recall Lasker's excuse as to why he lost to Nellie in the odds-match.

"At the critical juncture in the games, Mrs. Showalter would smile coyly, and then flash a bit of ankle. I was extremely flustered by such antics. When I complained to Mr. Showalter, he just guffawed and said, 'My Nellie is such a card! Have a cigar'.">

<<I would be very interested as to the source of this quote. I have not yet come across it in my Showalter research. Thank you.>>

LOL. This was a joke. In those times, showing an ankle was the same as going totally naked!!

I dropped an email to Allan Showalter to correct the article.

Will he?

  MissScarlett: <Nellie Love Marshall was born in Brookfield, Linn County, Missouri on August 19, 1870.>

<https://www.chess.com/blog/batgirl/...>

The December 1904 <ACB> stated she <comes from a prominent Kentucky family, but was born in the state of Missouri in 1872.>

The <St. Louis Post-Dispatch> of January 19th 1896, p.10, in a brief portrait, claims <She was born at Donerail, Fayette Co., in 1872, and is directly descended from Chief Justice Marshall of the United States Supreme Court. She studied at the North Middletown (Ky.) Seminary, and in February, 1887, married Jackson W. Showalter, who taught her how to play chess.>

Donerail and Brookfield are some 500 miles apart. Even if she liked to knock a couple of her years off her age by claiming to be born in 1872, it would make her 14 when she married Jackson.
