MissScarlett: Brooklyn Daily Eagle, June 26th 1919, Sect. 1, p.3:

<The death of Robert Colwell at the Masonic Home in Utica last week, where he had been for some months, removed from local chess circles a familiar figure, who had been a charter member of the Brooklyn Chess Club since its organization in 1886, a director for many years, and latterly its assistant treasurer. As chairman of the house committee he guarded with jealous eye the interests of the club, a second home to him, and the welfare of which lay very close to his heart.

As a chess practitioner he was rated in the first class, being a good "natural" player and not given overmuch to the study of the theory or of the books. Famous for ready wit and badinage, his table generally was the center of a group of non-combatants with preference for the merry quip to actual play.

As a member of the old guard that is gradually thinning out, Colwell was a unique and militant figure, and he will be much missed. He had attained the ripe age of 75.>
