Henry Harrison Swan was born and educated in the city of Detroit. In the fall of 1858 he entered the University of Michigan and in 1861 graduated with a Masters of Arts degree. After leaving college he worked on steamboats that traveled the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers in California. While so engaged he studied law and was admitted to the California bar in 1865. In 1867 he returned to Michigan quickly becoming a leading member of the Detroit bar. In 1869 he was admitted to the bar of the Michigan State Supreme Court and in 1870 was appointed assistant United States attorney of the eastern district of Michigan, a position he held until 1877 at which point he entered into a law partnership which lasted until 1891. He was appointed as judge of the United States district court in Detroit by President Harrison.

For more than a year prior to his death, his health had been failing and on June 9, 1916, he suffered from an attack of bronchial pneumonia. He died at his home in Grosse Pointe village on Monday, June 12, 1916.
