Edward John Napier was born in Plumstead, England, about 12 miles southeast of London. His younger brother was William Napier. When he was about 12, the family emigrated to the United States. In Portland, Maine, Napier first learned how to play chess. He later moved to Chicago, where he presided over the organ and choir of two prominent churches. In Chicago, he joined the Pillsbury National Correspondence Chess Association, where he served as secretary and then president. He later relocated again to Pittsburgh. In 1894 Napier entered the Continental Correspondence chess tournament.1
