ALEXANDER SHTENGER
(born 1897, died Feb-03-1938, 40 years old) Russia

Alexander Shtenger was born in 1897 in the Orenburg oblast. In 1926 he finished second in the 3rd Siberian Championship, scoring +13-2=2. He was one of only two players to defeat the tournament winner Pyotr Izmailov. 1 In December 1926 he won the Irkutsk Championship.2

Like Izmailov, he was executed during the Great Terror. On August 19, 1937 the NKVD arrested him and charged him with espionage. He was convicted and sentenced to death on December 30, 1937. He was executed on February 3rd, 1938. His name was rehabilitated in 1989.3
