PAVEL KOMAROV
(born 1892, died 1963, 71 years old) Russia

Pavel Ivanovich Komarov. Studied at Kazan University, later transferring to St. Petersburg. During the Civil War he relocated to Tomsk, then moved on to the Siberian capitol Novosibirsk.1 He was active in many Siberian chess competitions.2 In 1924 Komarov shared 1st with P P Benko in the Novosibirsk Championship. After the tournament he drew a match against the 3rd place finisher Boris Mazan +6-6=6.3 By March 1928, Komarov had attained Russian National 1st Category rank, and was invited to play in the 5th Siberian Championship in Novosibirsk. He finished equal first with Pyotr Izmailov, then lost a playoff match for the title +0-2=0.4

By profession Komarov was an economist. He wrote articles for the Siberian Soviet Encyclopedia, and in 1933 almost the entire staff of the encyclopedia was repressed by the NKVD. Komarov was arrested in 1934 and served a three year sentence in the labor camps. After serving his time, he moved to Bashkiria where he won the republic chess championship several times.1
