Jun-08-22  vonKrolock: "The Philadelphia Times" February 7th 1892, right? 🙂 (The old idea of the double piece sacrifice... there's an important dual ... not hard to fix)

<vonKrolock> I saw this Yamada puzzle in "Quarterly for Chess History" (Summer 6/2000), p. 399.

The "Quarterly" lists the "Philadelphia Public Ledger" (August 27, 1916) as their primary source.

It's a nifty puzzle eh?

Jun-08-22  vonKrolock: As You like it, <jess> ... The source comes from YACPDB online .The only of Yamada's efforts there.
Jun-09-22  Z free or die: Yamada was a 1891 graduate of Civil Engineering from Layette College. He returned to Tokyo shortly after graduating.

All of the above can be easily found via Google, and should go into his Bio. His dob could be estimated as ~(1891-22=1869). Likely his chess contributions were mostly published while he was in the US - and his dod might be hard to determine (since he returned to Japan).

HeMateMe: He must have been a brilliant naval commander. The American battle cry was

"Get Yamada!"

<z> Thanks but I am not finding anything on google search.

Possibly pass me a link to the search terms you used?

Also there is no such thing as <Layette College>. I presume you meant <Lafayette College>, which is indeed in <Easton>, the town that Yamada lived in whilst in America.

<z> Were you working from this google book page on Lafayette College?

https://books.google.ca/books?id=Tv...

The link provides this entry:

<Yamada, Sekuma, C.E.

b. Kagoshima, Japan, Sept. 4, 1869; W.; Delta Upsilon; trans. a work on electricity into Japanese, '90; with Tippett & Wood, Phillipsburg, N.J., '91-92; civ. eng., Tokyo, Japan, '92-.>

So he was born in Kagoshima, Japan on Sept. 4, 1869.

He was in the Delta Upsilon fraternity.

In 1890 he translated a work on electricity into Japanese, published by Tippet & Wood in Phillipsburg, New Jersey.

He got a civil engineering degree in 1891-1892?

He returned to Tokyo in 1892?

If you can shed more light on this I would appreciate your interpretation.

<z> although our hero is still a robust 152 years old, I wonder if we should send out the bat signal to <Tabanus> concerning the date of death?

Jun-10-22  Z free or die: <JFQ> - I found similar, but more piecemeal, references as you (i.e. Lafayette (!) sources).

Yours is more concise and complete. I missed it since I only searched for <Sokuma Yamada>.

(We now have Sokuma, Sukuma, and Sekuma apparently.)

I agree with your interpretation of the data from his Bibliographical Catalogue entry (CE = Civil Engineer almost certainly) - and my recollection is the other yearbooks confirms it.

<Tab> is the expert in this, of course - but I think getting the Japanese sources might be a challenge even for him.

Bon chance!
