Tabanus: The Field 1874 has several mentions of a chess problem solver <W. Knox Hamilton>. Go figure..

Then there are the corporals Hamilton and Charlwood popping up here and there, such as in Norwich:

<Local chess-players will learn with great pleasure that Corporal Hamilton has also been promoted to the rank of sergeant. The "corporals" will therefore be known henceforth in the Norwich Club as the "sergeants." Sergeant Hamilton did not join the regiment until many years after Sergeant Charlwood, and his early attainment of his present rank must be peculiarly gratifying to him.> (Eastern Daily Press, 2 November 1872, p. 4)

In Illustrated London News 28 Sep 1872 p. 311, Hamilton and Charlwood are "Corporals of the 7th Dragoon Guards", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_D...
