Eveline Allen Burgess (née Eveline L. Allen), daughter of Dr. James X. Allen.

Mrs. Burgess learned chess at the age of 14, having been taught by her father, an enthusiastic player. Of four tournaments held by the North St. Louis Chess Club Mrs. Burgess won first prize in three despite the fact that both men and women competed. (1) Her husband, Samuel Rostron Burgess, and her eldest son, Samuel Allen Burgess, also played chess.
