NewspaperChessArchiv: <jnpope> This guy's name must've been William A. Lewis, and elsewhere referred to as a veteran. However, it's going to be impossible to set the game up for PGN, because from all I can cull from chess sources, PGN doesn't allow null moves. The column refers to him as "Wm A. Lewis" (William).

NewspaperChessArchiv: Of course, not the same William Lewis as

William Lewis

William Lewis (chess player) ... William Lewis (1787-1870) was an English chess player and author, best known for the Lewis Countergambit. Around 1819 Lewis was the hidden player inside the Turk (a famous automaton), meeting all-comers successfully.

jnpope: Another nice thing about SCID is you can generate null moves (by playing king captures king from anywhere on the board). This is a great feature for this type of game.

Here is a PGN example of a "pawn and two" game:
F Greenaway vs Horwitz, 1850

NewspaperChessArchiv: <jnpope> Is it supposed to say: "Due to 'null moves', please update the 'PGN Viewer:'(below) to 'pgn4web', to view this game"

NewspaperChessArchiv: NVM... I found what its talking about.

jnpope: A number of PGN viewers are poorly coded and cannot handle certain types of odds game that were popular in days past.

The programmer behind pgn4web is better than most.

NewspaperChessArchiv: <jnpope> Well, I'm not doing the Lewis-Mlotkowski game above. If you want to convert it and set it up, let me know the link when you're finished.

As pointed out, this isn't true. Best to ask on the <Bistro> to get the latest info on all things <PGN>. Null moves are used, and both <SCID> and <ChessBase> support them.

The notation for <null-move> in the <PGN> is a double-hyphen.

E.g. <

1. e4 --
2. d4 d6

etc.
