MissScarlett: Spaeth is a name of German origin, and unusual enough to mean there's apparently only one candidate:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial...

According to Geneanet, his father was <Carl (Charles) Benjamin Spaeth, born August 20, 1801 - Labiau/Ostpreussen, deceased March 27, 1866 - England aged 64 years old, Merchant>

Spaeth was a member of the City club from October 1891 to c.1900. For the year 1896-97, he served as the honorary tournament secretary.

Oct-03-24  stone free or die: Since Harry was born in 1864, that would make his supposed father "Carl B. Spaeth" at least 62+ years old at the time. Surprisingly old, especially for the era.

As for the player's dod - why is the month given?

It's not for the dob, and find-a-grave itself only notes the year for the dod (with some unattributed comment about the burial date).

I'm assuming the find-a-grave dates come from the headstone (or tombstone). No idea where the burial date comes from - unless the cemetery itself keeps records.

MissScarlett: Carl certainly wasn't firing blanks - according to the Geneanet tree, he sired eleven children. Suffice to say that Harry's mother, Anne, was his second wife.

The Civil Death Registration Index lists his death in Q1 for 1916, and there's a burial record dated January 27th. Netherne Hospital, where he was interred, was a mental asylum, but during WWI it also served as a war hospital. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nethe...

Oct-04-24  stone free or die: <Carl certainly...>

Who needs pharmaceuticals when there's English roast beef and ale?

<My word! Is there anything better than English ale?
Let us thank God for simple pleasures -
a good appetite, roast beef and beer.>
