Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-29-13  thomastonk: I tried to find out a little bit more on this player.

Once I found "Rev. Hewan Archdall, Newcastle". Then "Rev. T.H. Archdall, Tanfield, Newcastle", and further sources for the "T.H.". However, he appeared also once as "J.H." and "A.Archdall". All taken from chess journals of the 1870s.

A much later source, BCM Vol 22 (1902), p 28, gives "Rev. H. Archdall, Gateshead".

At http://www.thepeerage.com/p26331.htm I found a "Reverend Thomas Hewan Archdale (sic)", but his parents are named "Archdall". He was the curator in Tanfield between 1874-77, and Vicar and Rural Dean in Gateshead from 1877-1924. This looks like our man.

He was born April 12, 1843, and he died June 23, 1924.

Apr-29-13  Calli: Good work! Richard Forster in the BBB (Big Book of Burn) also gives Thomas Hewan Archdall. There are a few more games for him in the CPC for 1873. I submitted this one: http://books.google.com/books?id=3P...
Apr-29-13  TheFocus: The BBB is a great book. Got my copy in a trade of books with Forster.
Apr-30-13  thomastonk: <Calli> Funny, that's just the game which draw my first interest yesterday.

<Calli> <TheFocus> Now, where the name is confirmed by Forster's book, it would be great, if the player's name would be completed and the biographical data added. Is one of you able to do so?

Apr-30-13  TheFocus: I will look tonight. I actually had BBB at work last week working on some Burn matches.
