Perhaps because of his profession as a medical doctor Emile Mulder was not an active chess player in his later years. I happen to have played him twice (!) after his retirement.
The reason I knew his name was his brother Han Mulder, a mediocre clubplayer in his younger years, but after retiring as a shop-owner in
the center of Eindhoven, one of the driving forces of chessorganisation in Eindhoven. Han organised weekly open air chess in the summer in the
1970ties and 1980ties. With a big board and pieces, and an immense chess clock, where an interested bypasser could play a game of chess. Regularly, tournaments were played on that board featuring the best Eindhoven chess players. In later years, chessplaying in this shopping street became increasingly popular and every saturday tables with chess
boards and pieces were present for the enthousiasts, and there was rarely an empty table seen .. The golden days of Eindhoven chess.
Mainly thanks to Han Mulder, who also initiated the annual Christmas junior tournament, and has been director of the Dutch championship semifinals as well, when these were organised in Eindhoven in the 1980ties.
In these 1980ties I also learnt about Emile Mulder, former provincial champion of Noord Brabant (seasons 1928-29 and 1929-30), former competitor in the Dutch championship.Dutch championship 1933 ( Den Haag/Leiden)
1. Euwe 8 out of 9 2. van den Bosch 7 3. van Hoorn 5,5
4. Felderhof 5 5.Hamming 4,5 6. Mulder 4 etc.
A forgotten name from the past and then suddenly I faced him at the board. Some chessplaying staff of the Diaconessenhuis-hospital contacted Eindhoven chess clubs and invited some of their players for a yearly tournament that was played on two evenings and a saturday afternoon.
In the major section, Emile Mulder played after decades
of retirement. Though in his 70ties he handled the opening sharply, my Pirc with 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6 3.Nc3 g6 4.f4.., and the next year a Leningrad Dutch with the black pieces. These were hard games where the difference in age and stamina eventually told in my favour (he was exactly 50 years
older..). But in the post mortem analysis he was still surprisingly to the point, considering his age and how long he had been out. It it positive that other players take interest in this old master from bygone days, and I am happy to have given the chance to mention his lesser known brother Han, who did so much for Eindhoven chess starting 40 years ago. |

Apr-18-13 | | Gejewe: Mulder played in a small tournament in Amsterdam, march 1933 :
1. Euwe 4,5 out of 5 2. Spielmann 3,5
3. Mulder 3 4. Kleefstra 2 5.Felderhof 1,5 6.Schelfhout 0,5In the Dutch championship in Amsterdam, in 1938 Mulder scored 50 %, 5,5 ot of 11 behind 1. Euwe with 9 out of 11, 2.Cortlever 8, 3.van den Bosch 7,5, 4.de Groot 6,5, 5.Landau 6, 6. van Scheltinga 6 etc. Rotterdam 1940 ( Kamstra-cup ) saw Euwe win with 7 out of 9 ahead of Vlagsma 6, Mühring 5,5, Kmoch,Landau and Samelius 5, and Mulder finishing 8th with 3,5 out of 9 After seing some results that show that Emile Mulder could hold his own in strong company I can now mention his first appearance on national level, at the Dutch championship in Amsterdam in 1929, won by Euwe with 8,5 out of 9 ahead of Landau and Weenink with 7, where poor Emile lost all his games. But learned a lot ! |
