Phony Benoni: He'll always be known as the poor fellow from the Fischer game whose pieces kept stepping on each other's toes. But the guy had something on the ball -- those are two Master-level players whom he defeated.

  MissScarlett: Sacramento Bee, November 15th 1960, p.C2:

<Ojars Celle, geologist, technical writer and native of Riga, Latvia - the home of world chess champion Mikhail Tahl - is the new Sacramento city chess champion.

[...]

The Latvian, Tahl, recently won the world title from the long time Russian champion, Mikhail Botvinnik, and the new Sacramento champion observed, smiling:

"Latvia is holding its own in the chess world."

Celle came to the United States in 1950, obtained a degree in geology at the University of California at Berkeley last year and now is studying technical writing.>

<Tahl> was quite common in the Western press for the first few years.

Jan-03-23  Ninas Husband: TAHL?!?!? It's spelled TALL!! :)
