MissScarlett: Chess Life, November 1985, p.26:

<Cris Ramayrat, a 27-year-old Filipino master has won what he described as "the biggest victory of my life." He scored 13-1, a tally which included back-to-back 2-zip victories over GMs Roman Dzindzichashvili and Yasser Seirawan, to win the 1985 U.S. Speed Championship and the $1,000 first prize. The runner-up at 11.5- 1.5 was IM Joel Benjamin.

The talented Filipino, who came to the U.S. Open "to get my rating above 2400," hails from Laoag City. He describes himself as a positional player who is much stronger in the middlegame and the ending than in the opening.

How would he use his big prize? "I want to buy some chess books," came the reply, "because I've never owned any before." And, indeed, he was seen later in the tournament studying assiduously....Vladimir Zagorovsky's Romantic Chess Openings.>
