MissScarlett: The obvious candidate would be the <John Gocher>, born in Bury St. Edmunds, c.1832 and a long-time resident of Ipswich in Suffolk. His parents were Thomas and Jane, and his brothers, Thomas and Charles. His trade is variously given as butcher or meat salesman. In the 1881 census, he's a retired meat salesman, an unmarried boarder, living in Aldeburgh, a coastal parish/town some 20 miles from Ipswich.

In April 1885, an unemployed 53-year old <John Gocher> was tried in Colchester, Essex, for <Soliciting William Charles Prime to commit an unnatural offence at Lexden, in the month of February.> <Guilty but Prisoner was insane when he committed the offence.> <To be Detained, during H.M. pleasure.> Another record states the offence as <Soliciting to commit B____y.>

Lexden, a suburb of Colchester, is less than 20 miles from Ipswich.

  MissScarlett: Ancestry has a <England & Wales, Christening Index, 1530-1980> which states Gocher's <DOB> is January 5th 1832. Which fits neatly with the <Civil Registration Death Index> of a 76-year old <John Gocher> in Q3 1908, in Easthampstead, Berkshire.
