<The Baker Defense>

J. Baker played against Blackburne and Steinitz simultaneously and won both games with the opening <1. e4 a6> - the stem game is 'Cochrane v Deschapelles' 0-1 (26), Paris 1821.

Also known as the 'St. George Defence' - see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._G...

  MissScarlett: No, but there's a chance he's the same Baker who played Deacon a few years earlier in a blindfold simul at the St. James CC: Frederick Deacon

  MissScarlett: OK, I see now that Harding in <Steinitz in London>, p.175, has:

<This was probably the John Baker who was on the managing comittee of the B.C.A. from 1866 amd maybe the same opponent to whom Steinitz conceded pawn and move in some (unpublished) games played in late 1863 at the London Chess Club, as mentioned in <The Era> of 29 November 1863.>
