MissScarlett: <D Tomalin> here, but <O Tomalin> in the list of London CC members, dated c.1825, as published in <Bell's Life>, March 5th 1870. From there it wasn't a great leap to identify <Obadiah Tomalin> as the prime candidate.

The <London Gazette> of February 13th 1816 noticing the dissolution of the business partnership between Tomalin and <John Allsopp>, based at No.24 Bucklesbury in the City of London.

The <Gazette> of February 14th 1826 announces:

<OBADIAH TOMALIN, of Size-Lane, in the City of London, Hatter, Dealer and Chapman, that he is in insolvent circumstances and is unable to meeet his engagements with his creditors.>

Another decade later, he's back in the court of insolvent debtors, as recorded in the <Public Ledger> of July 6th 1836, p.4: <Obadiah Tomalin, Size-lane, drysalter.>

Size Lane is close to where the London Chess Club was situated.

Tomalin died (or his death was registered) in Q1 (Jan-Mar) of 1843 in London. His DOB is March 11th 1772; he was born (or baptised, at least) in Daventry in Northamptonshire.
