Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-17-08  sambo: One of the most phenomenal games ever played, and seemingly the only document of this man.
Jan-17-08  whiteshark: Is this <Jules Michelet>, the famous French historian of 19th century ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jules_...

Oct-09-10  eightbyeight: It mystifies me too, friends. Michelet is the other guy who makes Kieseritzky famous for his losses (besides Anderssen), and yet we have only one game of his.

Michelet

Dec-17-22  generror: Yeah, not even Edward Winter seems to have written anything about this guy. I even began to suspect this is a fake, but it apparently was published in the 3rd edition of Bilguer's & von der Lasa's <Handbuch des Schachspiels> (1858), and I couldn't think of a more credible source. I'll try to dig that up and see if they write a bit more about Michelet. She probably was black or something :D

Nice quote too!

Dec-19-22  stone free or die: He died in Paris, according to Berger's 1899/1900 Chess Yearbook:

<Michelet in Paris, †, known for a witty game against Kieseritzky (Dufresne's Handbuch).>

The one game here appears to have come from Kieseritzky's 50 Games publication.

(Other games, if any exist, seem hard to find)

Dec-19-22  stone free or die: For a good rundown on the player Michelet (who likely wasn't really a player, but rather, a consultation team by the name of Michelex), see <thomastonk>'s posts, starting here:

Michelet vs Kieseritzky, 1845 (kibitz #38)

(The MM. stands for Messieurs in French, indicating a plurality, i.e. a consultation)
