It would appear that J. Stanley Jones (Joseph Jones) is not going to be W. Jones. J. Stanley Jones was still in Cripple Creek, Colorado, as of January 2, 1903, defending a mining claim, see <Mining Rights in the Western States and Territories: Lode and Placer Claims>, Denver 1903, p331.

He doesn't appear to return to the east coast, specifically Boston, until March 1903. Then he's out in Arizona in December 1903 checking on a copper mine.

It appears he setup his "Planet Copper Mining Co." office at 74 Broadway, New York. And moved back to New York.

He's next spotted in New York in June 1904 losing to Carl Schlechter in a team match. Then he plays in the 1904/05 Manhattan CC Championship.

Leaving the question, "who was W. Jones?", still open.
